Come to #basketball to discuss your favorite NBA or NCAA teams, players, league issues, scores, etc.  Discussion isn't limited to those two leagues, however - personal basketball experience, high school ball, overseas leagues, the WNBA... anything that's worth discussing in the wide world of basketball is welcome.

#Basketball has a few on-channel commands: For our news file (updated almost daily) with important NBA/NCAA/etc. news, type !news   ... For the NCAA AP Top 25 Poll, type !top25  ... To find out the most important (and televised) games of the day, type !games

I suggest being with us when you're at work (if your boss doesn't like it, suggest that he/she find a new place of employment!), school (if your teachers don't want you on irc, suggest they work on their own faults and leave you alone!), and at home (if you're relaxing, doing nothing, don't be productive and read, study or call friends - be on irc!).

When you're out living life, having fun, I suggest you bring along your laptop and cell phone, and hang on #basketball.  If you don't have a laptop and cell phone, go into mom's handbag, "borrow" her credit card, and go shopping!  If she catches you, tell her it was for her own good, and while she ponders that nonsense, run to the closest house that you know has internet access (it also helps to know the people who own the house, and receiving permission to go inside and use their computer can also be useful.)

How to have fun on #basketball

Come in and raise the basketball topics that interest you, and be prepared to really talk. When the channel is quiet, hang out a bit, or just come back later. When people join, talk to them - ask their opinions on whatever you want to talk about.

People who come prepared to engage in some real basketball discussions are the people who most enjoy the channel.
#Basketball is typically busiest at night, during games (especially important ones), and is (naturally) packed during March Madness and the NBA Playoffs.

Sample Conversation (for those of you who need a little extra help)

Person1: What's up, person2.
Person2: Hi person1, what's your favorite team?
Person1: The _________

Wow!  Person2 can now give his/her opinion on team _____,  probably leading to a reaction from Person1; a conversation has been born! Wow!

Example of the level of conversation #basketball enjoys:

<someFan> The thing about the Knicks is that whenever Pat Ewing is on the floor, the offense stands around watching him - it's no coincidence that when Ewing was injured, Allan Houston played his best basketball as a Knick.
<Anotherfan> That's nothing new, the Knicks have always been about giving the ball to Ewing and getting out of the way.  Even though Houston is very good (sometimes great), and LJ is good, Ewing isn't about to suddenly becoma a playmaking center.

Examples of the quality of conversation #basketball can do without:

<some-idiot> LAKERZ RULE, NIX SUCK
<another-idiot> NIX DONT SUX, U SUCK
<some-idiot> YO MOM SUX MORE THAN THE NIX DONT SUX
<a-third-idiot> U ALL SUX, BULLS RULE, YO MOMMAZ ALL SUCK.
<another-idiot> FUK THE BULLS, U SUCK AND THE BULLS SUCK 2.
<a-new-idiot> FREE PORN, MSG ME YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER

How not to have fun on #basketball

People who flood, repeat the same stupid thing over and over, are unable to speak coherent english, are excessively obscene, racist, or make it clear that they have no interest in really talking about basketball, will all promptly be ejected from the channel.

BrJ's official advice to idiots: "Don't be an idiot."
BrJ's official advice to non idiots: "Don't create the impression that you're an idiot."

But seriously - welcome to #basketball.  Have fun.
